This Music was recorded in the basement / studio of the Like Water World Headquarters, aka Ryan and Dori's house in Chelsea, MI. We recorded these tracks all in one day, as I recall, and just used a stereo mic to grab it (I can hardly believe that, but its true... it sounds really great to me).
Anyway - musicians here as best I can recall (and from hearing) are: Mamdouba "Milla" Sylla, Ryan "still-no-nickname" Edwards, Pete "Le Peche" Esselman, Bob Bob Leidel, Evan "Il Monstro" Gutierez and Sundance "Bobby"
This era was by far the ehight of our musicianship and excellence, discipline and power in the 8+ years that I directed LW. We had many many amazing iterations of the group before this, but just listen - it is in the words of Donald "Duck" Dunn - "powerful enough to turn goat piss into gasoline."
So yes.... and this month, Milla Sylla passed away. He was my teacher, partner, brother, adversary, and father to my namesake (RIP petit Ryan). For all he and I went through - 8 years of co-directing adventure travel, a million slaps and tones, he and his daughter living with my family in MI, and more - here is how I remember him now, and how I am pleased to offer friends and family the access to as well. His solos are the ones that are just super fast.
And this platform here - CHECK THIS OUT: if you donate to downlaod the record, I will send the $ to his family, all of it, back home in Guinea. I am still in touch regularly with Brahma Sylla and Milla's mom, and they are, of course, totally struggling. Milla's father died on late 2012, as did his elder brother (Ibro Militaire). The family is trying to scrape the $$ togther to have a proper sacrifice for all three of these losses ASAP in Cosa, Conakry - Guinea. SO ---- please consider donating something, and feel free to make it a lot ($10 from 10 people will more than cover the expense of a sheep for the sacrifice, which is the minimal purchase for such a ceremony).
I did keep it free, so if people are not having money, or didn't know Milla, or are unsympathetic - you can still check out this great music and enjoy a magical little mix we cooked up in Chelsea, MI called Like Water.
